Youth Construction Program: Building a Career in Construction


About YCIP:

The Youth Construction Initiative Program (YCIP) is an on-the-job-training program for vocational bound students. It is designed to afford 11th and 12th graders, especially minorities, females and the economically disadvantaged, an opportunity to explore careers in heavy highway construction.

Goals:

  • Prepare minority, female, and low-income high school students with job skills in the heavy highway construction trades
  • Provide students with training for securing driver licenses
  • Create opportunities for highway construction work and apprenticeship training upon graduation


Program benefits:

For Students:

  • Provide students with pre-apprenticeship training in heavy highway construction trades
  • Increase the percentage of students placed in heavy highway construction or related employment upon graduation
  • Provide career counseling regarding heavy highway construction trades
  • Provide one-on-one attention to students
  • Improve reading, writing, and math skills
  • Teach job search and interviewing skills
  • Introduce seniors to potential employers and paid apprenticeship programs
  • Provide students with paid summer internships in highway construction trades


For Employers:

  • Provide trained, skilled workforce ready for employment and apprenticeship programs in the heavy highway construction industry
